With the rapid development of AI technology, more and more creators are using AI-generated designs for the mass production of plush toys. However, when these designs are transformed into physical samples, there often exists a gap between the actual product and the design intent.
So, how can we effectively bridge this gap between AI and reality to ensure the final product perfectly captures the original design vision?
When using AI to generate doll designs, it is advisable to prioritize clear lines, well-defined structures, and distinct color blocks in a cartoon style. Such designs are not only visually striking but also easier to manufacture. In contrast, highly artistic, cyberpunk, or hyper-realistic styles are often difficult to reproduce accurately due to their complexity and should generally be avoided.
To better translate the design into a physical product, consider requesting AI to generate multiple views of the doll, including front, side, and back angles. This approach fully presents the three-dimensional structure of the doll and facilitates subsequent 3D modeling, allowing designers to grasp the overall shape more accurately and reducing discrepancies between the physical product and the design.
Balance “essential” and “decorative” elements by first identifying the soul of the design and ensuring the core elements are faithfully reproduced. Idealized decorative details, such as extremely fine or intricately intersecting lines, can be omitted. Clearly determine which details must be preserved, which can be simplified, and which can be replaced with existing techniques.
Color and material selection: Some colors in AI-generated designs may not have exact matches in the Pantone library, so it’s necessary to rationally optimize these colors. Additionally, some fabrics envisioned in the design may not be readily available on the market. Compare various fabric swatches against the design, considering texture, gloss, thickness, and touch to select the most suitable alternative. For special colors in AI designs that standard color cards cannot cover, we need to optimize and choose shades that closely approximate the original design. For idealized virtual fabrics in the design, place various fabric samples next to the design and compare them comprehensively based on texture, sheen, thickness, and tactile feel.
Maintain close communication and corrections with the factory during sampling. In the first round of sampling, focus on whether the overall proportion, silhouette, and core expression convey the intended feel of the design. Minor color deviations and embroidery precision can be tolerated temporarily at this stage. We aim for progressive accuracy from form to spirit, gradually approaching the ideal finished product through iterative rounds of samples.
